06 Feb 1998, Tehran, IRAN --- A man passes by a mural in Behesht Zahra cemetery, depicting fighters with red headbands ready for martyrdom during the Iran/Iraq war, Ayatollah Khomeini's portrait in the background. Thousands of martyrs, some from the revolution but mainly from the Iran/Iraq war, are buried. In the 20th century, the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini of Iran emphasised the importance of martyrdom among Muslims. In the Iranian Revolution, and later in the Iran-Iraq War, he led Khomeini's Islamic Republic against Saddam Hussein of Iraq. Shaheed, or a martyr, is a religious term in Islam, given to a Muslim after his death if he died during the fulfillment of a religious commandment, or in the name of religious war. --- Image by © Kaveh Kazemi/Corbis
